How many times should I post to my Facebook page?
This is a question we’re asked all the time and, in the past, we’d have agreed with conventional social media wisdom and said what every other digital community manager would likely say: Between 1 and 3 posts maximum.
However, we’ve had a rather interesting experience over the past six months on a Facebook page we manage that has almost doubled its likes (to more than 66,000 fans) – and we post up to 15 times per day.
Yep, up to 15 times a day with a minimum of 10 times a day.
If we hadn’t seen it with our own eyes, we probably wouldn’t believe it – and many of our colleagues in the industry still don’t, but it seems that if you’re providing engaging content that isn’t spammy or self-promotional and always offers value, fans will not automatically ignore your posts or tune out. Our experience also says that they won’t necessarily unlike you either.
In fact, in the past month we’ve posted more posts on this particular Facebook page than ever before – and our figures are increasing every week.
The fans are increasing, but so, too, are the likes and shares.
But it’s no easy feat. In fact, we can spend up to four hours a day finding or creating a day’s posts because every single post has to offer value or you will lose fans.
It also means, certainly in this page’s case, that we capture fan eyeballs at all times of the day. Most Facebook users don’t visit their favourite pages daily. Instead, they rely on what appears in their News feeds. By posting several times a day (with awesome content, of course), you’ll ensure your fans see your content regardless of their timezone.
This method of multiple posts is labour intensive and requires great imagination, but it’s worth it. There aren’t too many social media agencies that can claim to post 15 times per day – and have it work.
So, folks, the lesson is this: Post as many times is right for YOUR site. 15 times is way too much for some businesses but, for others, it’s a perfect number of posts. Since no two social media fan bases are identical, no single rule can ever apply.
If you’re brave enough (or have a large enough audience) to risk losing a few fans, test it out.
You’ll quickly discover how many posts your specific fan base will accept – and how many they won’t!
